Mackerel fish curry

Lip smacking mackerel fish curry made with a just few ingredients in one pot.

Mackerel fish is a very tasty fish and a rich source of vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids. It is popularly known as ‘Titus fish’ in Nigeria.

Commonly eaten fried, boiled, or grilled, mackerel has a unique taste that most people enjoy.

This mackerel fish curry is a delightful marriage between the bold flavors of the mackerel and fragrant aromatic Indian spices. And the result is an intensely spicy and fragrant fish curry which is simply delicious.

This is a terrific recipe to try. The fish maintains its unique flavor and the flavor of the spices also shine as well. Also, there is a lot of delicious tomato sauce in the curry which is great for white rice or boiled yam.

Ingredients for mackerel fish curry

  • Mackerel fish: It is commonly known as ‘Titus fish’ and it’s a bit more expensive than other iced fishes sold in Nigerian markets.
  • Brown mustard seeds: These are tiny brown seeds that add a sharp tangy flavor to the dish. Mustard seeds are also available in yellow, and black colors. But the brown seeds have a sharp and spicy bite.
  • Lime: Adds a tangy flavor to the fish
  • Curry leaves: Infuses the fish with its unique curry perfume.
  • Red onion: A large red onion should be okay
  • Ginger and Garlic: Essential components in Indian curries
  • Spices: Garam masala, cumin, and coriander will be required
  • Fresh tomato: Important to balance out the bold flavors in the curry
  • Salt and pepper: Add to taste.

Directions

This fish curry is very easy to prepare. Firstly marinate the fish with lime and tempered spices. Marinating the fish is important to infuse it with the essence of the tempered mustard seeds and curry leaves. Secondly, prepare the spicy tomato sauce. Lastly, cook marinated fish in spicy tomato sauce. And food is ready!!!

  1. Lightly toast mustard seeds and curry leaves with one tablespoon of vegetable oil, mix in the juice of 1 lemon and some salt and use the mixture to marinate the fish for an hour.
  2. Saute onions in vegetable oil then add in ginger and garlic.
  3. Fry for 2 minutes then add the spices and fry for 1 minute

Mackerel Curry

  1. Stir in chopped tomatoes and fresh pepper if using any.
  2. Fry till tomatoes become soft.
  3. Add in coconut milk and a little water. Leave to simmer for 5 minutes

Mackerel Fish Curry

  1. After 5 minutes, add the mackerel pieces and simmer covered for an additional 10 minutes and the curry thickens.

  1. Serve hot with rice or boiled beans and potatoes just like me. I really enjoyed eating it!!
